Day 8 (13.11.2012) Phu Chi Fa village to Phayao City (135km)

Wake up at 4am and started our trek at 4.45am. We reached the peak at 5.15am, however, the sun only rises at about 6.30am. We then had bread and jam for breakfast at the peak and by 7.20am we trekked down and reached the town at 8.20am for another round of porridge breakfast. We took the same van at 10am down to Chiang Kham to take the slow bus to Phayao. In Phayao we walked around the town and had very good seafood dinner at Reasamran Restaurant beside the lake.

Walking around and exploring the Phayao lake side.

Walking around and exploring the Phayao lake side.

Lake Phayao covers around 17 square kilometres and was formed by the construction of a dam by Thailand's Fisheries Department in 1941. Prior to the dam's construction the area was filled by a number of smaller lakes and swamps, with their levels changing seasonally with the rains.

Phayao lake offers one of the best viewpoints at twilight to observe the beauty of a sunset as the sun slowly sets amidst rolling hills on the western part of the lake.

Phayao lake traditional fishing methods still rely on dugouts and simple gear such as cast nets and fishnets.

The reflection of the afternoon sun over the vast expanse of water enhances the beautiful landscape of Phayao Lake. It is the biggest freshwater Lake in Northern Thailand and the fourth biggest in Thailand.

On an afternoon such as this, the local folk, as well as tourists, fill the benches on the promenade of Phayao Lake, which skirts the east-side of the lake. Alongside is the road that also provides an embankment for this 2,500-hectare freshwater lake.

King Ngam Muang Monument - Born in 1238, Ngam Muang was schooled in Lopburi and returned to take over his father's role as ruler of Phayao in 1258. Eighteen years later, when expansionist King Mangrai marched on Phayao from Chiang Rai, King Ngam Muang went out and met him. Rather than fighting, the two struck a deal making allies rather than enemies.

The King Ngam Muang Monument is near the public park looking over lake Phayao.

We had very good seafood dinner at Reasamran Restaurant beside the lake Phayao.

  1. I'd met some Hmong tribal little girls singing and dancing near the Golden Triangle. Sad to say the parents do not send the children to schools.

The little girls look lovely in their multi-colored costumes.

It's great to witness the sunset. However leaving the warm bed so early in the morning.....

Nice to know that there's a 17 sq.km lake in the form of dam at the Phayao Township.
