2024 - Trans-Siberian Train Adventure (Day7 Chita, Russia)

A 30day 9,938km Trans-Siberian Train (21 Jun>21 Jul, 2024) Vladivostok in the east to St. Petersburg

Day 7 (June 27) Chita in Russia (25° / 12°)

As we approached Chita, the landscape changed from poplar forests, farmland, villages, rivers, and stream crossings to more densely populated settlements. There were small, densely populated towns along the railroad line, surrounded by industries such as agriculture, lumber, and mining. What a sight! We arrived in Chita in the morning at 08:30 for hotel breakfast. After checking in, we visited the huge Russian Orthodox Church opposite the hotel known as Kafedral'nyy Sobor Kazanskoy Ikony Bozhiyey Materi.

Chita was founded in 1653 as a wintering camp, and a fort was built there in 1690. Chita then became a centre for trade with China, along the caravan route that was later followed by the Chinese Eastern Railroad.

We visited the Decembrists’ Church Museum (originally called the Church of Archangel Michael). It used to be a church, but now it's a museum that tells the tragic and romantic history of the Decembrists, about which many films have been made. Dmitry Zabarishin, a Decembrist who settled after forced labor, married Apollinaria Smolyaninova in this church.

TO THE GEOLOGISTS OF TRANSBAIKALIA

Then we went out for lunch: some of us went straight for Russian pizza, while the rest went to a Russian "chapfan" place in a nearby communal kitchen: we liked the clear beef soup with potatoes, and the meat wrapped in a cabbage dish.

We again boarded a public minibus and headed to the Tichinsky Datsan, a Buddhist temple in Chita.
