2024 - Trans-Siberian Train Adventure (Day8 Chita to Ulan-Ude)

A 30day 9,938km Trans-Siberian Train (21 Jun>21 Jul, 2024) Vladivostok in the east to St. Petersburg

We had breakfast in the small village cafe of Yengil.

Day 8 (June 28) Chita by overnight train to Ulan-Ude

We left City Hotel at 6am and headed to the Alkhanai National Park, about 200km away. The journey took almost 3 hours. It was raining so we had breakfast in the small village cafe of Yengil. For breakfast, we had bread, fish with cheese, carrots, cabbage and mashed potatoes mixed. We had tea with milk.

It was raining when we arrived at Alkhanai National Park, so we couldn't hike, but the ranger (who looked Mongolian) took us as far as we could go, despite the rain. It's interesting to find a stupa and Buddhist chant at the entrance to a Russian national park. Unfortunately, the event was cancelled due to continued rain. Some of us did a short walk along a river before we returned to the town for a per-ordered lunch before heading back to Chita.

We had lunch at Yengil. We had homemade roast and fruit drinks. The young staff of the family-run restaurant were happy to take group photos with us, selfies, and photos with friends, etc. After leaving Al Khanai National Park, we went to the Grand City Hotel to freshen up and rest for a while. At around 8:30pm (sunset was around 9:30pm), we headed to Chita Station to catch the night train that was leaving at 11pm, about 45 minutes late.

Alkhanay National Park Park covers the area around Mt. Alkhanai, which is now the heartland and sacred mountain for the Buryats, Siberia's largest indigenous people. Alkanai later came to be recognized as sacred by Mongols, shamans, and Buddhists. The Dalai Lama made two informal visits to Alkhanay. The name of the area comes from an ancient legend in which a princess fled from her pursuers to the top of the mountain, defiantly yelling "Kill me! "as they approached, which means "Alhanay" in the local language. Despite the old name, peace and healing are the focus of today's Buddhist pilgrims who ascend the mountain trail.

Mt. Alkhanai is one of the "Five Holy Peaks" of Northern Buddhism. A significant percentage of the park's visitors are pilgrims, who are particularly attracted by certain sights such as the mineral springs, rock formations, and rock-lined mountain trails. Of particular note is the "Demchog Sume", the home of the guardian deity Alkhanov Demchog (Yidam Chakrasamvara), the "Temple Gate", a rock with a hole in the middle through which pilgrims pass for healing, and the Buddhist meditation site of the priests.
