2024 - Trans-Siberian Train Adventure (Day27 Saint Petersburg on day 3)

A 30day 9,938km Trans-Siberian Train (21 Jun > 20 Jul, 2024) Vladivostok in the east to St. Petersburg.

The State Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg. Catherine the Great founded the museum in 1764 after purchasing a collection of 255 paintings from a German.

Day 27 (July 17) Saint Petersburg on a guided walking city tour (day 3)

We just went to one destination today because it is vast and huge: The State Hermitage Museum. I am unsure what to write about, so I will let the photographs and videos speak for themselves. It was established in 1764, when Empress Catherine the Great purchased a collection of paintings from Berlin merchant Johann Ernst Gotzkowsky. Every year on December 7, Saint Catherine's Day, the museum celebrates its founding anniversary. Since 1852, it has been open to the public.

The collection is huge and diverse, and it is a must-see for anybody interested in art and history. According to experts, if you spent one minute looking at each exhibit on display in the Hermitage, it would take you 11 years to see them all. However, our local guide, Maria, curated the more intriguing portions of the Hermitage Museum for us to see and guided us through the displays. We spent approximately 5 hours.

I would emphasise things I thought were fascinating. 1. As part of its contribution to the construction of the Aswan Dam, the USSR received several Egyptian artefacts. The Soviets were interested in the mummies at the time! 2. How Peter the Great turned Russia from a predominantly Western Asian kingdom to a European one, which was thereafter strengthened by numerous successors, similar to Meiji Japan. 3. Intermarriage between the German and Russian royal families, which produced Catherine the Great. 4. How paintings were acquired and some resold... early days of painting investment! 5. A canvas with a repaired original artwork of Tsar Nicholas II and Lenin painted on the other side by a student. To be honest, the collections had us stunned. If you want to take a virtual visit, I have attached links to Wikipedia and YouTube videos!

The primary or Jordan Staircase of the Winter Palace in St Petersburg is so named because on the Feast of the Epiphany, the Tsar ascended this imperial staircase in state for the ceremonial of the "Blessing of the Waters" of the Neva River, which commemorates Christ's baptism in the Jordan River. The staircase is one of the few portions of the palace that retains its original 18th-century style.

St George's Hall (the Large Throne Room) is named after the bas-relief of St George (Russia's patron saint) conquering the dragon that hangs behind the throne and was created in London for Empress Anna Ioannovna. As the principal Throne Room, it is one of the most important chambers in Russian history, having hosted many official events and spectacular celebrations. The parquet floor was made from 16 different types of expensive wood, and there are 28 crystal and bronze lighting throughout the space.

Painting of Lenin (1924).

The restorers discovered that this canvas had been a painting of Tsar Nicholas II done in 1896 by Ilya Galkin Savich. After the revolution the leaders of the school of course had to switch their portrait of the Tsar for one of Lenin. Rather than painting Lenin directly on top of the Tsar, or just throwing that canvas away, Vladislav Izmailovich put Lenin on the back of the imperial portrait, which he protected by covering it with multiple layers of white paint. Izmailovich had been successful before the revolution painting portraits of the elite, and it looks like he was hoping that the old regime would one day come back.
