2024 - Trans-Siberian Train Adventure (Day26 Saint Petersburg on day 2)

A 30day 9,938km Trans-Siberian Train (21 Jun > 20 Jul, 2024) Vladivostok in the east to St. Petersburg.

Today's morning plans include riding the Metro and strolling to The Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood, a Russian Orthodox Church in Saint Petersburg, Russia that serves as both a secular museum and a church.

Day 26 (July 16) Saint Petersburg on a guided walking city tour (day 2)

The 1st stop of the day is Resurrection Savior on Spilled Blood Cathedral. Built to commemorate Alexander II following his assassination in 1881, this magnificent church with Italian pink marble flooring and numerous mosaics was inspired by 16th and 17th-century churches. The structure was built between 1883 and 1907.

The 2nd stop was Saint Isaac's Cathedral, a magnificent architectural monument now serving as a museum with occasional religious services in Saint Petersburg. It is dedicated to Saint Isaac of Dalmatia, the patron saint of Peter the Great, who was born on his feast day.

After visiting St. Isaac Church, we went on a canal boat ride. After the trip, some of us went for an early dinner at Russian Vodka Room Restaurant. We ate pork schnitzel with cranberry sauce, which was excellent. Those who ordered the pork knuckle could not finish and had to 'tapau' back to the hotel for supper.

The cathedral was built on the same spot where Narodnaya Volya members killed Emperor Alexander II in March 1881. The Romanov imperial dynasty funded the church in honor of Alexander II, and the term "on [Spilled] Blood" alludes to his assassination.

The cathedral stands out architecturally from the rest of Saint Petersburg's architecture. The city's architecture is primarily Baroque and Neoclassical, but the Savior on Blood pays homage to medieval Russian architecture in the spirit of devoted nationalism. It was meant to imitate the 17th-century Yaroslavl churches as well as Moscow's famous St. Basil's Cathedral.

According to its restorers, the church has more mosaics than any other in the world, totaling approximately 7500 sq m. The walls and ceilings of the church are fully covered in exquisitely detailed mosaics, with the main images being biblical scenes or figures, but with very thin patterned borders separating each picture.

After visiting St Issac's Cathedral, we boarded a canal tour arranged by Maria. St Petersburg, known as the "Venice of the North," is made up of 40 islands connected by more than 60 canals and around 500 bridges. Saint Petersburg's canals, rivers, and bridges are among the city's most captivating attractions, with each bridge having its own unique style, décor, and history. Some draw bridges function in the early morning to let ships to pass through. Maria pointed out one of them: the Palace (or Dvortsovy) Bridge.
