2018 My first ride to Pulau Ketam

5th August 2018 - It was my first ride from Subang Jaya SS14 via Pandamaran to Port Klang South Port, a boat ride to and from Pulau Ketam and finished with a KTM train ride back to Subang Jaya.

At 6.15am my son Caason Ching and I together with our neighbour Lawrence Tho rode out together to meet the rest of the other five cyclists Alan Koh, Lam Chee Keong, Ms Maggie, Kay Men and Victor Choo also from SS14 our RT Captain. The ride started at 6.30am meeting at a bus stop on the Kesas Highway next to SS14 heading towards Port Klang.

It was a cool morning ride with slight rain before reaching Pandamaran town for breakfast at Kedai Kopi Makanan Seng Kee at 8.16am. After breakfast we continued our ride arriving at Port Klang South Port, Ferry Terminal at 8.53am. We took the 9.15am Alibaba5 ferry for Pulau Ketam.

On the island and without reservation, we explored every corner possible wherever there is a bicycle passage. The island has a few kilometres of concrete pavement.

After lunch at Restoran Kim Hoe it was time to go home and were heading to the jetty to catch the ferry leaving at 2.30pm. By 3.14pm we arrived at Port Klang ferry terminal. The 3.30pm KTM Komuter ride from Port Kelang to Subang Jaya instead of cycling on a hot afternoon, we were looking forward to see our family for dinner. Arrived home safely at 4.55pm with a vote of thanks to all the cyclists and to our team leader Victor Choo.

8.55am - Buying the Alibaba Pulau Ketam Cruise ticket at Ferry terminal. Return ticket is RM18 pp.

Maggie Goh Kim Hong cycled with us up to the ferry terminal with Kaymen Leong, but both did not join us to Pulau Ketam as both of them needed another 50km of cycling. Maggie is training hard for the 1,200km race in Perth WA from 1st to 4th October 2018. Wishing her a safe journey.

10.07am - The fish farms along the coastal area.


10.09am - Sungai Lima Village. The “floating houses” that come to view as visitors approach the island. On long wooden stilts these dwellings are suspended about ten feet above sea level.

10.11am - Ferry arrived at Sungai Lima for passengers to get down.


Sungai Lima village is one of two settlements on the island with Pulau Ketam village.


10.33am - Alan Koh had a flat tyre when we arrived at the jetty. Well, all of us helped him to change the inner tube. We discovered that it was a small staple that punctured it.


Pulau Ketam if translated to English is "Crab Island" a fishing community literally floating or sitting on silts. It was founded by some Hainanese fishermen at the turn of the century. Its built entirely stilts on a mangrove island known for its mud crabs, hence the name ‘Pulau Ketam’.


On arrival at ferry jetty we cycled through the busy main street of the village which is lined with shops selling dried fish and groceries.


11.43am - Pulau Ketam is the best opportunity for visitors to witness and experience the unique lifestyle of fishermen.

We cycled about 8km of narrow path in the island.


11.46am - There are no beaches on this island but there are plenty of sampans and fishing boats which rest on mud when the tide goes out.









This is a father and son team - it was our first trip here and we enjoyed cycling around and observing and experience their lifestyle in the island.







12.09pm - There are no roads or cars and the only way to get around is by boat, walking and cycling on the narrow wooden or concrete boardwalks within the village.

Reasonably priced and good food. We had silver promfret / deep fried squid / fried meehoon / lala / fish ball soup / vegetables / 2 rice / tea / a big plate of fried oyster. Total: RM188 for 6 pax (32 pp).

The steamed seashells lala or kapar with sliced ginger. The soup is sweet to go with rice.

2.30pm on board the ferry for Port Klang.


3.14pm - Out boat arrived at Port Klang, Ferry terminal.


3.28pm - Final destination to Home Sweet Home Subang Jaya SS14. We took the KTM to Subang Jaya - RM4.40pp and RM2 for bicycle. The rail journey took about 45 minutes with some stopping at stations along the way to Subang Jaya.
