A 30day 9,938km Trans-Siberian Train (21 Jun>21 Jul, 2024) Vladivostok in the east to St. Petersburg
Our last train ride in Russia: We left Moscow at 10 p.m. yesterday and arrived in Saint Petersburg at 6 a.m. today. Our local guide, Maria, was waiting to help us board a rental vehicle and take us to a 24-hour cafe near the famous St Kazan Cathedral for an early breakfast before embarking on a guided city tour.
Day 25 (July 15) Saint Petersburg on a guided city tour.
After breakfast, we walked along the Griboyedov canal, passing by Kazan Cathedral before crossing the canal via Griffin On Bank Bridge to our bus. From there, we rode 50 km to Peterhof Park and Gardens..
The Griboedov Canal is a tiny and twisting canal that runs through the heart of St. Petersburg, connecting the Fontanka and Moyka Rivers. Although the canal is only six kilometers long, it is crossed by more than 21 bridges. The canal is also well-known as the location where anarchist rebels murdered Russian Emperor Alexander II, surely one of the most high-profile terrorist assaults of the 19th century.
Kazan Cathedral, commonly known as the Cathedral of Our Lady of Kazan, is a Russian Orthodox Church cathedral located on Nevsky Prospekt in Saint Petersburg. It is dedicated to Our Lady of Kazan, one of Russia's most adored icons.
St. Petersburg's Bank Bridge is one of the world's most stunning pedestrian bridges, thanks to the magnificent golden-winged griffon statues by renowned local sculptor Pavel Sokolov. It is also the city's narrowest, measuring 1.85 meters, making it a little architectural marvel. The bridge is named after the Assignation Bank, one of Russia's earliest public banks.
Peterhof Park and Gardens is one of St. Petersburg's most well-known and popular visitor attractions. The palace and park at Peterhof are sometimes referred to as "the Russian Versailles," however many visitors believe that the comparison understates the majesty and scale of this beautiful estate.

The Peterhof Palace and Gardens is about 48 km from Kazan Square in St. Petersburg, where we had breakfast. From the square to Peterhof in about an hour by our rented bus. Our local guide Maria recommended that we begin with the Peterhof Lower Park, then move on to the Upper Garden, and ultimately to the Alexandria Park.

Peterhof Park and Gardens: The stunning parkland at Peterhof is notable for the wide range of styles represented in its design and features. Peterhof, which represents nearly two centuries of European aristocratic taste performed to the greatest standards, is like an encyclopedia of park design throughout the empire. Particularly impressive is the fact that the master landscapers and garden designers who worked on the Peterhof estate were able to create a wonderland of greenery and flowers, sweeping vistas, and ornate architectural decorations despite the harsh northern climate.

The Grand Cascade, the most famous fountain ensemble, extends from the Grand Palace's northern facade to the Marine Canal and includes 64 different fountains as well as nearly 200 bronze statues, bas-reliefs, and other decorations. We walked almost 10,000 steps and did not cover the entire area (the Palace spans 200 hectares), so we concentrated on the most important areas. Peter the Great commissioned the Peterhof Palace, a collection of buildings and gardens in Petergof, Saint Petersburg, in response to Louis XIV of France's Palace of Versailles. Originally intended for country dwelling in 1709, Peter the Great planned to extend the property following his visit to the French royal court in 1717, earning it the nickname "The Russian Versailles." Domenico Trezzini was the architect from 1714 to 1728, and his style laid the groundwork for the Petrine Baroque style that became popular across Saint Petersburg. The gardens were also planned in 1714 by Jean-Baptiste Alexandre Le Blond, who was most likely chosen because of his past works with Versailles landscaper André Le Nôtre. Between 1747 and 1756, Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli constructed an enlargement for Elizabeth of Russia.
