2019 Sichuan Tibetan Plateau (Day 8)

Day 8 (21.10.2019) – Luding > Moxi town > Hailuogou Scenic Area > Ya’an > Chengdu
We were all doing "Jumping of Happiness" in Moxi town for a successful Sichuan Tibetan Plateau road trip.

On day 8, we traveled about 350km in 5 hours at an altitude 1600-3600-500m, and then back to Chengdu completing the 7 days of 1,900km road trip. After early breakfast we traveled 54km from Luding to Moxi town then to Hailuogou Glacier Forest park entrance to get the bus and cable tickets, (entrance 92¥, sightseeing bus 70¥, cable car 150 ¥).

We duly enjoyed the magnificent view of Hailuogou Glacier and the majestic Gonggar Mountain view. Hailuogou is located at the foot of Gonggar Snow Mountain, famed for its low altitude glaciers. Huge ice cave and steep ice bridge makes you feel like entering a mythical Crystal Palace. Especially the unique large ice fall of over 1000m and a width of 1100m. Back to Moxi town for lunch and later walk around to view the French Catholic Church and the temporary army camp of the Red Army of Mao Zedong built in 1935.

Returned to Chengdu along the Dadu River, and crossing the country's 14km longest Erlang Mountain Tunnel. Pass the Rain City, Ya’an, also known as the "throat of West Sichuan". Arrived at Chengdu at about 8.30pm ending our 1900km road trip.

7.19am - Along the 1062km Dadu River that flows from the eastern Tibetan Plateau into the Sichuan Basin where it joins with the Min River, a tributary of the Yangtze River.

There are 4 campsites of different landscapes at different altitudes in Hailuogou Glacier Park.
No.1 Campsite is 1940m high and the vegetation landscape is a vast of Chinese yews. The famous Gongga Shentang hot spring lies between the gate and No.1 Campsite.
No.2 Campsite is 2580m high and the vegetation landscape is primitive forest.
No.3 Campsite is 2940m high and tourists could see the spectacle of “the sunshine on golden mountain” in a sunny morning. Here tourists could seek a lodge in Jinshan or Yinshan Hotel.
No.4 Campsite is 3600m high and the essence of Hailuogou Glacier Park. Here you could see an ice fall of 1100m high, watch from a distance into the major peak of Gongga Mountain range.

Hailuogou Scenic Area is divided into four main parts called Base Camp 1, 2, 3 and 4. From Base Camp 1 to 3, you can take a sightseeing bus. From Base Camp 3 to 4, you can take a cable to get to the top of the grand ice waterfall. In addition to taking a bus or cableway, you can also choose to walk all the way up. The No.1 glacier is 14.4km’s long and 23.2sq km’s big. Its end stretches 6km into the forest. It is one of the lowest glaciers at the same longitude in the world. Visitors can walk from Camp3 to get really close to this glacier. In the glacier, there are lots of hidden ice ponds, ice caves, ice arches, etc. And the Great Icefall is very stunning. It is 1000 meters’ long and 1100 meters’ wide.

Hailuogou East Face - Hailuogou Glacier Park is in the core area of Mount Gongga Range, among which mount Gongga is the highest mountain soaring up to 7556 meters.

There is always fog everywhere in the Hailuogou Glacier Park mountain side.

Moxi Town or Moxi Zhen, is a small town by the entrance of the Hailuogou Glacier park at the base. It is a tourist place used to be a small village. A catholic church and a former Red Army residence are something interesting to see.

Moxi town is a settlement of Han, Yi, and Tibetan people, and the town itself dates back to before the Qing Dynasty. The name, Moxi, literally means “A Promising Land” in the ancient Qiang language. While it is now the buzzword for Hailuogou, Moxi Town dates back to the time of the ancient Sichuan-Tibet Tea and Horse Road, known as Chamadao, which began in the tenth century.

Moxi Town was an important town along the ancient Tea and Horse Road for supplies and rest, since nearby Kangding was the center for Tea Horse Trading in Kham.

Newly built hotels, restaurants, shops, and inns line the now-modern street in Moxi Town.

The ancient part of Moxi Old Town has just one street left in its original style. Here the buildings date back to the Ming Dynasty and many are preserved, with old-style shop fronts still plying their trades in local handicrafts and traditional Tibetan and Han foods, including yak meat.

Deep among the older streets of the town lies a small part of western culture, in the form of an old, Gothic Catholic Church, which was built by French missionaries in 1918. However, while the church may be a western notion of religion, the style and architecture is very oriental, blending the French romanticism with the traditional temple style of southwest China.
