2019 Sichuan Tibetan Plateau (Day 6)

Day 6 (19.10.2019) - Yading Village > Chonggu Temple > Pearl Sea > Gongga Lang Jiling Monastery > Daocheng 稻城

On day 6, we traveled about 110km in 2.5 hours at an altitude from 3700-4100-3500m. After breakfast we departed our hotel at Yading Village 1 for 3.4km by sightseeing bus to reach Zhaguan Beng and then walked 0.5km to the Chonggu service area. From here we first visited the Chonggu Temple, the foot of XianNairi Mountain, the holy lake of Zhuoma Lacuo (Pearl Sea). Pearl Sea Lake is located at the foot of the XianNairi Mountain.

After visiting the scenic area, the sightseeing bus took us back to the park entrance where our bus driver was waiting. On journey back to Daocheng, we enjoyed the scenic Citu River, Gongga Lang Jiling Monastery, Qing Yang Lin Woods, paradise-like Tibetan village. The cottonwood along the journey poses the beautiful view of Shangri-La. In Daocheng we check-in at Daocheng Jinzhu Grand Hotel for a rest. Tonight dinner at Suonanlinka Tibetan Restaurant was special, it was hosted by a China doctor friend of Peter Pan working in Chengdu.

Chonggu Temple 冲古寺 stands at the foot of the peak Chenrezig, 3880 meters above sea level. The name literally means “a monastery built” on the lake in Tibetan.

Chonggu Temple is an important stop for tourists going to the three peaks, which is Chenrezig, Jampayang and Chenadorje. It is also the place to start kora, a pilgrimage around the mountain.

The Chonggu Temple is like the door to the heaven, guarding the sacred land of Shambhala.

Chonggu Temple in Daocheng County is a 800-year old temple built during the Yuan Dynasty. The remnants of Chonggu Monastery lie at the foot of Mount Chenrezig and consist of a Shijia sculpture in the chapel.

The American adventurer Joseph Rock stayed in the Chonggu Monastery for three days when he visited Yading in 1928, enjoying the tranquil overview of moonlit Yading Valley through the window of the monastery. It is said that the experience of Rock in the monastery is what James Hilton writes about Blue Moon Valley in Lost Horizon is based on.

Chonggu Temple occupied the best geographic location in Yading Natural Reserve. Standing in the front of the temple, visitors can enjoy an exaggerated blue sky on the top of the head, a yellow-green-interphase meadow underfoot, never melted snow mountains in the distance and a tranquil valley in the back.
