2019 Sichuan Tibetan Plateau (Day 5)


Day 5 (18.10.2019) - Daocheng > Chonggu Monastery Lawn > Luorong Pasture > Five Color Lake (Wuse Hai) and Milk Lake (Niunai Hai) > overnight at No.1 Station of Yading Village scenic area of Yading Nature Reserve 亚丁自然保护区.

On day 5, we travelled 110km in 2.5 hours at altitude from 2,700-4100-3900m at No.1 Station of Yading Village for a night. Our bus took us to Yading Visitor Center to purchase Yading entrance ticket (¥150pp) and sightseeing bus (¥120pp). Ride sightseeing bus into the scenic area, about 40 min to Yading Village to unload luggage at hotel and continued for 3.4km in 20 minutes to Zhaguan Beng. Here we walked 200m (10 min) to reach Chonggu Visitor Center, enjoy the scenery at Chonggu Monastery and Xian Naire Holy Mountain.


The route: Daocheng > Chonggu Monastery Lawn > Luorong Pasture > Five Color Lake (Wuse Hai) and Milk Lake (Niunai Hai) > overnight at No.1 Station of Yading Village scenic area of Yading Nature Reserve.


8.32am - Our bus took us to Yading Visitor Center to purchase Yading entrance ticket (¥150pp) and sightseeing bus (¥120pp).

9.01am - We have to walk from Yading Visitor Center to this building to catch the sightseeing bus up the mountain.


Look at the long queue here just to wait for the sightseeing bus up to Zhaguanbeng,


We walked 200m to Chonggu Visitor Center to enjoy the scenery of Chonggu Monastery.

11.05am - Enjoyed the scenery of Chonggu Monastery and Mt.Xiannairi (6032m) at a distance.


Chong Gu Monastery sits at 4000 meters. This small monastery is nearly 800 years old and sits at the base of Mt. Chenresig’s north face. Mt. Chenresig, known in Chinese as Xian Nai Ri, is the highest mountain in the reserve rising to 6032 meters.

11.27am - Luorong Pasture 洛绒牛场 is 4,200 meters above sea level with the Gongga River running through. In the center of the pasture, there is a large area of marsh and wet land. Stand here to get a better view of the Yangmaiyong and Xianuoduoji Peak.

Luorong Pasture cattle farm is surrounded by rolling alpine meadows. In the spring and summer seasons, wildflowers bloom in the meadows, and the mountains and plains are very spectacular. The Gongga River passes through the cattle farm, and the flocks of cattle and sheep graze leisurely on the riverside and on the hillside, creating a harmonious scene.

11.36am - On the far end of the grasslands are 8 to 10 small huts where local Tibetans live during the spring and summer months. These Tibetans rent horses to Chinese tourists who wish to go to Milk Lake.


Past these hut, you will go towards the left where the path returns to dirt. You will follow this dirt path along the rest of the grasslands that lie in front of Mt. Jampelyang.

Luorong Pasture (4,200m) is an alpine pasture surrounded by three sacred snow mountains. Gongga River flows through the pasture, leaving a charming harmonious picture of moving tickled streams combined with still wooden house, blue sky and green grassland. The nature and creature also integrated with each other harmoniously.


11.47am - The Yading Nature Reserve in the Kham region of Sichuan is one of the most beautiful places on the Tibetan Plateau.

These 3 snow-capped peaks sit in a triangle formation with forested valleys, clear rivers, glacier-fed lakes and abundant wildlife between them.

12.49pm - We stopped here for preparing lunch.

1.27pm - We noticed many hikers taking lunch in this small cave.






1.48pm - After the pass, there is a slight descent and Milk Lake can be seen in the distance. The path remains well marked. The route from Luorong Grasslands to Milk Lake gains about 300 meters in elevation and covers a distance of 4 1/2 to 5 kilometers. However, I opt for the Five-Color Lake first.

2.28pm - Arrived at Five color lake.




Five Color Lake, which sits at 4530 meters in elevation right at the base of the south face of Mt. Chenresig. There are piles of prayer stones around the lake that are draped in prayer flags. Five Color Lake is the most beautiful of all the lakes around Chenresig.


Sitting right at the base of the south face of Chenresig, Five Color Lake is the most beautiful lake around the pilgrimage circuit and should be visited.


A short 20 minute hike from Five Color Lake to Milk Lake.

A good view of Milk Lake. Milk Lake is a stunning glacier fed lake on the south end of Mt. Chenresig. The lake is crystal clear and the reflection of Mt. Jampelyang mirrors off the lakes surface.


Milk Lake at an elevation of 4480 meters, is a stunning glacier-fed lake that sits at between Mt. Chenresig and Mt. Jampelyang. This lake is considered holy to the Tibetan people so swimming in the lake is not allowed. Milk Lake, known as Niu Nai Hai in Chinese and O Tso in Tibetan, is very picturesque.

6.09pm - After the 10km hike, returned to Yading Luoke Culture Theme Hotel located at No.1 Station of Yading Village scenic area for the night and dinner.
