We drove about 1km down a dirt road and parked in an open field with a other cars containing tourists.
Everybody were waiting anxiously for the bats and listening to a guide talking about the history of the cave and the lives of the bats while we waited for the bats to make their their big appearance.

And then we saw the bats coming out. First, they trickled out a few at a time, but quickly they formed into a thick ribbon swirling and snaking around the sky above us.

Like a shadow rising up from the hill, a cloud of small black shapes stream through the twilight. They are bats, thousands upon thousands of them emerging to hunt insects as they do every night at Bat Cave Khao Yai National Park.

A guide there told us that up to 3 million wrinkled-lipped bats lives in this cave. During the sunset a long cloud of bats can be seen out from the cave for hours, creating a spectacular view. This spectacle occurs for hours every night before the last bats exit the Bat Cave at Khao Yai National Park.
It was a magical night and as we set off back for dinner, we concurred that it was time well spent and we were grateful for the opportunity to have had seen the bats.

I've come across this blog when I was researching about Thailand! Such wonderful life experiences you've had. If you're a backpacker, remember to consider options such as digital nomading, Couchsurfing, Workaway, Worldpackers, housesitting, and petsitting. I love budget backpacking using hostels to make friends and socialize. My favourite part of travel is street food and going on nature walks! I found out Skyscanner and Google Flights gives really good flight deals. Guesthouses and homestays give good deals for accommodation. Hope you visit more of your favourite countries!
