2018 - Perth Holiday Adventure (16-30 October) day 11 Albany 414km drive to Perth

Day 11 (26.10.2018) – It was time to get back to Perth after 6 nights of outdoor camping in the caravan park of South-Western Australia. I have not changed my pants for the last 6 days. After breakfast, we drove to town to visit the Dog Rock and the Blowholes. Picked up some sandwiches and coffee for lunch at Kalgan River Chalets. After bidding farewell to Albany it was a slow five and a half hour 420km drive from Albany to Adross, Perth. Upon reaching home at 6.10pm, Monica was there to welcome us back and had already prepared Nasi Lemak for dinner.

Perth weather: 29°/11°C.

Dog Rock is a large, natural granite outcrop that juts from the ground along Middleton Road between Middleton Beach and the centre of Albany in the Great Southern region of Western Australia. The rock is a prominent landmark and has the shape of a dog's head when viewed from the western side, leading to the name.

Frenchman Bay and the 10km road to Torndirrup National Park and The Blowholes. It is a beautiful and easy drive from Albany.

The drive takes you around the western edge of Princess Royal Harbour and along the tree-lined peninsula towards all of the natural attractions of Torndirrup National Park.

On Blowholes Road getting to The Blowholes at Torndirrup National Park WA. Eclipse Island is on the far side.

The carpark is quite a distance from the Blowholes. The 1.6 km return walk begins at the western end of the carpark and is well signposted. Follow the bitumen path for about 400 metres to the top of some steps. There are fine views of Peak Head to the south-east and Eclipse Island to the south-west. After the steps the path swings to the right then traverses an open granite area.

A sign at the beginning of the walk for you to tell whether the blowholes are 'blowing' on the day you visit.

The view of Bald Head on the trail to The Blowholes at Torndirrup National Park WA. The Bald Head Walk Trail is a challenging 12.5 kilometre return traverse of the Flinders Peninsula providing stunning views of the Southern Ocean and King George Sound.

To reach the blowholes you need to walk a hundred metres down a long flight of stairs on the trail to The Blowholes at Torndirrup National Park WA.

On the trail to The Blowholes at Torndirrup National Park WA. The Blowholes, the result of water being forced up into a crackline in the granite, produce spray and loud eerie sounds when a big swell is running.

Signs indicate the location of the Blowholes. At the Blowholes, do not proceed any further to the ocean and do not stand over the Blowholes. The sound of the blowholes is impressive.

The Blowholes are crevasses in the granite stretching down to sea level far below. With each wave the 'holes' blow air and water up the channel and out the top creating a burst of spray and a loud droning whoosh! The sound of the blowholes is impressive.

The rocks of this coastline were once connected to Antarctica when Australia was part of the supercontinent Gondawana. The rocks around the blowholes were created some 1800 million years ago. The blowholes are due to gradual erosion by the southern ocean.
