Day 3 (08.11.2012) Chiang Mai to Thaton (215km)
After the hotel breakfast at 8.15am we took the truck or songthaew to Chang Phuak northern bus station to take the bus at 9am for the 4 hrs journey (215km) to Thaton which stopped just after crossing the main bridge. Thaton is in north Thailand, 4 hours from Chiang Mai on the side of Mae Kok River. It is a very relaxing town. Many travelers may also take a boat on Mae Kok River from Chiang Rai. We visited the temples north of the bridge and also south of the bridge. We had dinner at a stall by the road side.

On the road up we visited a buddhist monastery. The office of the Wat Thaton’s abbot and a Buddhist school are also located at this level.

Wat Thaton (Phra Aram Luang). Level four contains the Phra Nakprok building that houses the Vipassana meditation center. On the roof of the building is a huge seated Buddha image sheltered by a mythological seven headed Naga serpent.

The most striking building of the temple complex is the newly built Chedi Kaew or Crystal pagoda. This very colorful structure has a large spire on top. Both sides of the entrance are decorated with golden colored Thewada figures (celestial beings) on a red background.
