The famous 5.5km Nanjing Road 南京路 in Shanghai. The eastern part of Nanjing Road is the main shopping streets of Shanghai and is one of the world's busiest shopping streets along with Fifth Avenue and Times Square.

Day 15 (13.12.2011) Shanghai - free and easy day at the Bund

Two of us went to a reflexology centre at Congen along Dagu Road (Y108 an hour) beside our residence. Had lunch at SUBWAY fast food restaurant before taking the Metro subway to Shanghai Science and Technology Museum and walked to the shop at K3.55 to buy our winter jacket which cost Y200 a piece. We returned to the subway to go to East Nanjing station to visit the Peace Hotel, the Bund. We then walked along the Shanghai pedestrian mall to People’s Park and from there we took the subway back to West Nanjing station.

In the evening we took Metro Line 2 and get off at Lujiazui Station. Get out from Exit 1 and you can see the Oriental Pearl Tower. We went back the same way and walked back to our apartment for a rest and later walked out to take our dinner at Noodle Bar.

The Peace Hotel is on The Bund in Shanghai, which overlooks the surrounding areas. The hotel has two different buildings. The Sassoon House, originally housed the Cathay Hotel and is today the Fairmont Peace Hotel run by Fairmont Hotels and Resorts of Canada. The South Building was built as the Palace Hotel and is today a residence and studio for artists, known as The Swatch Art Peace Hotel.

The two buildings at the end of Nanjing Road East belong to the well-known Peace Hotel, built in 1906. In the style of European Renaissance, it is the oldest hotel in Shanghai.

The Shanghai Bund, a 1.8-kilometer-long boulevard along the west bank of Shanghai’s Huangpu River, has been restored as the city’s preeminent public space.

The Bund or Waitan (外滩) is a waterfront area and a protected historical district in central Shanghai. The Bund usually refers to the buildings and wharves on this section of the road, as well as some adjacent areas.

The Shanghai Bund houses about 52 architectural styles buildings ranging from Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and Neo-Classical.

Pudong as seen from the Bund is a sprawling, sparsely populated area with family attractions like Century Park, offering bike trails, boating lakes and mini-golf courses, as well as Shanghai Disney Resort. Small, home-style restaurants serve Shanghainese food, while nightlife is centered on the glitzy Lujiazui district. Shanghai World Expo Center draws crowds with its futuristic pavilions, and Pudong International Airport is a major hub.

Looking out on the Huangpu River, various cargo vessels, tourist ferries and locally owned boats navigate. High-rise buildings and skyscrapers such as the Oriental Pearl Tower dominate the skyline of the Huangpu River and the Lujiazui Financial District in Pudong, Shanghai. We would cross over to Pudong in the evening.

We then walked along the Shanghai pedestrian mall to People’s Park and from there we took the subway back to West Nanjing station.

Nanjing Road pedestrian street is where modern and traditional retail intermix. There are more than 600 shops and stalls from old and new China alike with items to be seen such as food, clothing, shoes, toys, and much more, not to mention cinemas, theaters, hotels, restaurants, and beyond. The most popular section is right next to The Bund pedestrian waterfront along the Huangpu River, also known as Nanjing Road East. Nanjing Road West is more known for its high end boutique selections hosting some of the world’s most significant commercial names. Shopping on Nanjing Road is certainly a must-do experience for all visitors.

The Seventh Heaven Hotel is a landmark of Shanghai on Nanjing Road famous for the large thermometer on its facade.

Day 17 (15.12.2011) Shanghai – Tianzhifang, Yuyuan Garden & shopping

After a heavy breakfast prepared by our Shanghai friend, we walked to the subway to Tianzhifang a smaller version of the French Concession. From here we walked to SML for lunch and then took the subway to Yu Yuan Garden. We then went to Uniqlo to buy more clothing before meeting our shanghai friend for dinner at Noodle Bar.

Tianzifang or Tianzi Fang (田子坊) is a touristic arts and crafts enclave that has developed from a renovated traditional residential area in the French Concession area of Shanghai. It is now home to boutique shops, bars and restaurants.

Yu Garden or Yuyuan Garden () located beside the City God Temple in the northeast of the Old City of Shanghai at Huangpu Qu, Shanghai Shi. A centerpiece is the Exquisite Jade Rock (玲珑) a porous 3.3-m, 5-ton boulder. Rumours about its origin include the story that it was meant for the Huizong Emperor (Northern Song Dynasty from 1100 to 1126 AD) at the imperial palace in Beijing, but was salvaged from the Huangpu River after the boat carrying it had sunk.
