1.1 - The Betrothal Gifts 娉礼 Exchange

In our modern context, this laborious process of unification between two families has been simplified into these important steps: Betrothal Gifts (娉礼/过大礼). The betrothal gifts are prepared based on the bride and groom’s dialect groups and is sent to the bride’s family to confirm the marriage agreement between the two families. In the olden days, the value of the betrothal gifts determines the financial stability of the groom.

It is a traditional way of thanking and showing respect to the bride’s parents for raising the bride, and a desire to forge good relations with the future parent-in-laws.

On 13.11.016 we drove to Penang with the Betrothal Gifts and stayed at my brother's place in Tanjung Tokong, Penang. The next morning, my son Ching Jin Yuan together with Ching Jin Wei delivered the Gifts to the bride's family for their kind acceptance.

Penang Ferry began its operations in 1920, making it the oldest ferry service in Malaysia connecting Sultan Abdul Halim ferry terminal in Butterworth to Raja Tun Uda ferry terminal at Weld Quay in George Town in Penang Island. Penang Port Sdn. Bhd. (PPSB) manages the ferry service.

At the vehicle deck. For a long time we have not taken the ferry, so this time we took the ferry from Butterworth to Penang.

By ferry crossing to Penang for a night at Ching Neng Shyan's residence.

I have taken some nice photos from the ferry.

The 15 minute ferry ride (RM7.50 per car) allows visitors to enjoy the spectacular view of the water ways and Penang Island.
