EBC trek Day 01 – Kuala Lumpur KLIA to Kathmandu (1,334m/4,375ft)

2017 Everest Base Camp Trek
Walked in the Footsteps of Mountaineering Legends!

2017 Namaste! Everest Base Camp (EBC) 5,364m in the Himalayas welcome (L-R) Ching Neng Bin, Abdul Rashid, Simon Loh, Alan Koh, Prakash Kapri (guide), Ong Teik Hong, Randy Ngatimin and two porters infront; Binod and Rajendra.

After having trekked the Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) four years ago in October 2013, it was my only dream left to trek the Everest Base Camp, which was considered one of the great treks of the world, and to walk in the footsteps of mountaineering legends - Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay. My dream came true when I joined a six-member team from October 28th  to  November 11th, 2017.

Day 01 (28.10.17) – Kuala Lumpur KLIA fly 3,400km to Kathmandu (1,334m /4,375ft) by Malindo Air. (Flying time: 4hr 40min). Upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, a representative of the trekking agent greeted us and took us to Hotel Thamel, located in the heart of Kathmandu, where we were able to find out about our EBC trek. Overnight at the Thamel Hotel.

The pilot's descent was very abrupt and frightening with the mountains in the background. On arrival, we applied for a 15-day visa for USD25 which took us at least 2 hours before we exit the arrival lounge.

Hotel Thamel is 15 mins drive from the airport and is within walking distance from most of the attractions like the monkey temple, Garden of Dreams, King Palace, and Durbar Square.

1 USD for 102 Nepalis Rupees. Noticed the telephone wire, was just as messy as in Laos and Cambodia.

Nepali Kukri Knife was just what we were looking for around the knife shop and asked for prices.

The kukri or khukuri is a Nepalese knife with a curved blade, used as both a tool and a weapon in Nepal.

We had to arrange dinner ourselves. We walked around the Thamel area and ordered fried rice which was too big for each of us to finish. We retired early when we heard our Team B consisting of younger adults from Singapore only arrived at midnight while their plane was circling in the sky for their landing slot.
